PSYCHOLOGY AND MUSIC

Diana Deutsch - University of California, San Diego

The relationship between psychology and music is characteristic of that between new science and an established discipline. Western music theory has a very old tradition, dating at least from the time of Pythagoras; and the philosophical underpinnings of this tradition that were established in ancient times still exist today.

MUSICAL EMOTION: TOWARD A BIOLOGICALLY GROUNDED THEORY

This dissertation seeks to identify the mechanisms whereby music arouses emotions. It begins by asking three questions: Does music arouse emotions? If so, which ones does it arouse? And how does it arouse them?

MUSICAL CREATIVITY

Raian João

This collection initiates a resolutely multidisciplinary research dynamic specifically concerning musical creativity. Creativity is one of the most challenging issues currently facing scientific psychology, and its study has been relatively rare in the cognitive sciences, especially in artificial intelligence. This book will address the need for a coherent and thorough exploration.

BRAIN AND MUSIC. A WINDOW TO THE COMPREHENSION OF THE INTERACTIVE BRAIN FUNCTIONING.

Here we review the most important psychological aspects of music, its neural substrates, universality, and likely biological origins. Finally, how the study of neurocognition and music emotions can provide one of the most critical windows to comprehend higher brain functioning and the human mind. We begin with the main aspects of modularity theory, its behavioral and neuropsychological pieces of evidence.

LANGUAGE AND MUSIC AS COGNITIVE SYSTEMS

In recent years, the fields of linguistics, musicology, experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and evolutionary anthropology have witnessed an increasing interest in the comparative study of music and language as cognitive systems. This conference aims to bring together major contributors from these areas of research in order to assess the progress made, and future directions to take, in this truly interdisciplinary enterprise, and to provide researchers and graduate students from diverse backgrounds with a unique forum for discussion.

BRAIN ORGANIZATION FOR MUSIC PROCESSING

Research on how the brain processes music is emerging as a rich and stimulating area of investigation of perception, memory, emotion, and performance. Results emanating from lesion studies and neuroimaging techniques are reviewed and integrated for each of these musical functions. We focus our attention on the common core of musical abilities shared by musicians and nonmusicians alike.

INTERVALS AND SCALES

This chapter examines human sensitivity to pitch relations and the musical scales that help us to organize these relations. Tuning systems – the means by which scales and pitch relations are created and maintained within a given musical tradition – are also discussed. content of your file and make sure to highlight your contact details for further questions and remarks.
